Great Zimbabwe precursor settlements
1000
On the granite hills south of the Zambezi, Shona-speaking communities were raising the first stone enclosures that would eventually grow into the complex at Great Zimbabwe. Cattle wealth and gold from the Zimbabwean plateau supported a rising elite. The trade network reached Swahili ports and ultimately Chinese porcelain markets, linking the southern African interior to a commercial web spanning the entire Indian Ocean.
