Third Battle of Panipat

January 14, 1761

Ahmad Shah Durrani, the Afghan king, met the Maratha Empire on the old killing-ground north of Delhi. By nightfall tens of thousands of Marathas were dead - their leadership shattered, their northern imperium broken. The slaughter created the political vacuum the East India Company would rush to fill. The battle ended Maratha ambitions for pan-Indian hegemony and left northern India fragmented and vulnerable.
