Shaka Becomes Zulu Chief

On the death of his father, Shaka - an illegitimate son trained in the techniques of a neighboring warlord - became chief of a small Nguni clan called the Zulu. Within a decade his short stabbing spear and disciplined impis would remake southern Africa in a cataclysm his enemies called the mfecane, the crushing.
