Vienna in Revolt
May 15, 1848
A crowd invaded the Hofburg and the emperor's family fled to Innsbruck. For six months Vienna was held by students and radicals who abolished feudal dues and demanded a constitution. In October the army returned, shelled the city, and hanged the rebel leaders in the Prater. The 1848 revolutions died first in the cities where they had begun.
