In a ceremony broadcast live on television for the first time, the twenty-seven-year-old queen was anointed with holy oil, handed the orb and scepter, and crowned with the heavy St. Edward's crown. Millions in Britain bought their first television set for the occasion. Monarchy had a new kind of relationship with its subjects.
