Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke released a film that was a visual essay about human evolution, machine intelligence, and the cosmos, set to Strauss waltzes and spanning from a bone thrown into the air to a starchild over earth. Bewildering and beautiful, it became the most influential science fiction film ever made.
