Avicenna begins the Canon of Medicine

The Persian polymath, already author of a vast philosophical summa, began compiling a million-word encyclopedia of ancient and Islamic medicine at Hamadan. Organized around causes, symptoms, and treatments, the Canon would serve as a standard textbook in European universities until the seventeenth century. Its systematic classification of over seven hundred drugs and their properties made it the most influential medical reference work ever written in the medieval world.

Al-Biruni publishes his India

The Khwarezmian polymath, traveling in Mahmud of Ghazni's wake, finished a large-scale ethnographic study of Hindu learning and religion based on his own Sanskrit studies. His account of Hindu astronomy, philosophy, and caste practices was accurate and largely sympathetic, a model of comparative cultural study far ahead of its time.

Song Dynasty population reaches fifty million

Census registers in Kaifeng recorded a population that had doubled since the dynasty's founding, driven by new strains of fast-ripening Champa rice imported from Vietnam. The demographic surge fueled urbanization on a scale unknown elsewhere in the world: Kaifeng alone held over a million residents, with night markets, teahouses, and a fire brigade that patrolled its wooden streets.

Yaroslav begins Kiev's stone cathedral

To celebrate his triumph, the grand prince began construction of St. Sophia of Kiev, a thirteen-domed Byzantine-style basilica that declared Rus Christianity's equality with Constantinople itself. Fresco painters from Byzantium covered its walls with saints staring out of golden backgrounds that still shine nine hundred years later. The cathedral's mosaics rank among the finest surviving examples of Byzantine art outside Constantinople.
