University of Bologna traditionally founded

Italian scholars teaching Roman law at Bologna organized themselves into a formal studium, traditionally dated to this year. Students from across Europe flocked to hear Irnerius and his successors expound the rediscovered Justinianic code. Bologna is considered the oldest continuously operating university in the Western world. Its student-governed model, in which pupils hired and fired their professors, would influence university charters across Europe.

Shen Kuo completes Dream Pool Essays

The Song polymath, retired from government service, compiled his Brush Talks from Dream Brook, an encyclopedic miscellany describing the magnetic compass, movable-type printing, astronomical phenomena, music, mathematics, and archaeology. It was the most wide-ranging scientific work of the medieval world, written by a single curious mind. His observation that the compass needle points slightly east of true north was the first recorded description of magnetic declination.

Shen Kuo Describes the Magnetic Compass Needle

In his Dream Pool Essays, the retired polymath Shen Kuo provided the world's first explicit description of a magnetized needle - suspended on silk thread or floated on water - and noted that magnetic north deviated slightly from true north. This observation of magnetic declination, made almost casually amid hundreds of other entries on astronomy, geology, and medicine, would eventually underpin the navigational revolution that made oceanic exploration possible.

Urban II elected pope

The French Cluniac monk Odo of Chatillon was elected at Terracina after the brief pontificate of Victor III. As Urban II he would revive Gregorian reform, mend fences with Alexios I of Byzantium, and eight years later summon Western Europe to the First Crusade at a Clermont council that changed history.

Dream Pool Essays Documents Geological Insights

Among the hundreds of entries in Shen Kuo's masterwork was an observation that would not be surpassed for centuries: marine fossils found in mountain strata proved that land now far above sea level had once been ocean floor. Shen deduced that landscapes changed over vast periods through sedimentation and uplift - a proto-geological insight that anticipated Western uniformitarianism by seven hundred years. The Dream Pool Essays treated the earth as a document to be read, not merely walked upon.
