Mongols defeat Seljuks at Kose Dag

The Mongol general Baiju crushed the Sultanate of Rum in a mountain pass in eastern Anatolia. The Seljuk state collapsed into vassalage, leaving a patchwork of Turkish beyliks that, half a century later, would include a small frontier emirate under one Osman. The battle effectively ended Seljuk independence and opened Anatolia to the Mongol sphere, reshaping the political landscape of the entire region.

Innocent IV flees to Lyon to escape Frederick II

Disguised and riding through the night, the pope escaped from Italy across the Alps to the protection of the French king at Lyon. From exile he organized resistance against the emperor, excommunicated him twice more, and attempted to depose him. The papal-imperial showdown had become a war of survival, and the spectacle of a fugitive pope directing Christendom from exile demonstrated the papacy's remarkable institutional resilience.

Seljuk Anatolia becomes a Mongol vassal

After the rout at Kose Dag, the Seljuk sultans of Rum accepted Mongol overlordship and agreed to pay heavy tribute. The once-proud sultanate fractured into competing Turkish beyliks, small frontier states whose warriors would one day coalesce under the banner of a certain Osman. Among these fragments, the embryonic Ottoman state began its quiet expansion along the Byzantine frontier in northwestern Anatolia.

Innocent IV elected in Anagni

After a twenty-month vacancy, the cardinals elected the Genoese canon lawyer Sinibaldo Fieschi as Innocent IV. He would spend his pontificate in open warfare with Frederick II, at one point fleeing disguised across the Alps to safety in Lyon. His legal mind sharpened the papacy's claim to depose secular rulers, a doctrine that would echo through centuries of church-state conflict in the West.
