Baibars takes Antioch

The great Crusader capital, founded by Bohemond of Taranto in 1098, fell to Mamluk assault. The city was sacked and burned; its inhabitants killed or enslaved in numbers that shocked even contemporaries. Antioch, ancient and Christian, ceased to exist as a Latin state. Baibars wrote a gloating letter to Bohemond VI, who had been absent during the siege, detailing the horrors his city had suffered.

Al-Mansuri hospital chartered in Cairo

The Mamluk sultan Qalawun ordered construction of a vast hospital in Cairo, to serve all comers regardless of wealth or creed. The bimaristan included wards for different diseases, a pharmacy, a library, and fountains. It would function for six centuries as a medical center. Musicians were employed to soothe patients, and a section for the mentally ill provided care centuries ahead of European practice.

Mamluk sultan Baibars codifies military slave system

The Mamluk sultan formalized the system of purchasing young Turkic and Circassian slaves, converting them to Islam, and training them as elite cavalry in Cairo's citadel. The paradox of a state ruled by slaves who were also its best soldiers would sustain Egypt and Syria for three more centuries. Each new generation of mamluks was imported afresh, preventing the formation of hereditary dynasties and keeping the military perpetually renewed.

Earthquake and tsunami strike Cilicia

A major earthquake centered near the Gulf of Alexandretta shook the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, collapsing churches and fortifications across the coastal plain. The resulting tsunami flooded the port of Ayas, disrupting the vital trade link between the Mongol Ilkhanate and Italian merchants. Armenian chronicles describe entire coastal villages swept away and inland roads blocked by rockslides, compounding the disaster's economic toll.
