Genghis Khan defeats the Tatars
1196
In alliance with the Jin and his blood-brother Jamukha's old lord, Temujin helped annihilate the Tatar confederacy that had poisoned his father. The Jin emperor rewarded him with a Chinese title. The campaign marked his first major step toward dominating the steppe. The Tatar defeat avenged Temujin's personal grief and eliminated one of the most powerful rival groups on the eastern Mongolian plains.
