Republican Calendar Adopted

October 5, 1793

The Convention threw out the Gregorian calendar of priests and kings. New months were named for the seasons - Brumaire, Floréal, Thermidor - weeks became ten days long, each day divided into ten decimal hours. Napoleon would quietly abolish it in 1805. Nobody had really learned to tell time in Fructidor.
